We have now arranged our main summer exchange for 2019 and expect to be busy in the autumn. We are open to offers for 2020. We prefer to be in a quiet and scenic rural area. It could be in an isolated location, or possibly on the edge of a village. We would be especially interested in staying close to water, ideally with access to a boat. We are open to offers for shorter exchanges at other times in rural parts of the UK where we could take our small dog. We would particularly like to exchange with a family who would enjoy keeping an eye on our two miniature Shetland ponies.

March 01, 2020 - December 31, 2020 2 weeks

We are now seeking an exchange for 2020.

Cottage near Bala, Wales, Great Britain: two Shetland ponies.

Wales is a beautiful country with wild mountain scenery, great medieval castles and a unique Celtic culture, preserving its ancient language and traditions. It may be less well known to visitors from abroad than Scotland or Ireland, but it is just as fascinating.

Our house, called Tanymarian, is a traditional stone cottage built in the early 19th Century, about half a mile out of the village of Llangynog in the Berwyn Mountains.  The valley is beautiful and unspoilt and the house stands on the hillside well away from the road. Its location is peaceful and secluded. We are four miles from the boundary of the Snowdonia National Park.

We bought Tanymarian over twenty years ago as a holiday cottage, but we now live here full time.  We have extended it twice and there are four bedrooms and a modern kitchen.  We have central heating, but we usually light the traditional coal fire in the sitting room in the evenings.   Most of the furniture is antique and we have many original pictures. There are many books which you are welcome to read.

A garden surrounds the house with fruit trees, flower borders, a small pond and two sunny terraces. Beautiful walks start from the door. Close by is a field where we keep two miniature Shetland ponies, Rosie and Poppy: they are friendly and we would be grateful if you would keep an eye on them during your stay.

The house is built on several levels and has to be approached by a footpath from our parking area above the garden, so it is not suitable for people with limited mobility.

In 2019 we would enjoy an island holiday, perhaps in Scandinavia and maybe with the use of a boat. But we are also happy to consider offers from elsewhere, including rural France. We like to be in the countryside, the quieter the better, and prefer to avoid busy resorts.

Unsere Wohnlage

Llangynog lies at the head of the Tanat Valley in the Berwyn Mountains, close to the eastern border of the Snowdonia National Park. In our area you can walk all day in the hills and meet only sheep. Google's aerial view shows what looks like a race track in a nearby field: fortunately this no longer exists. The village, about half a mile down the hill, is small and quiet: it has no shop, though there are two pubs and a new attraction, the Revolution Mountain Bike Park (for experts only). One of Wales's famous male voice choirs in based in the next village, and the Welsh language is still widely spoken here. Close by at Pennant Melangell is an ancient pilgrimage church with some of the oldest yew trees in Britain.
We are only half an hour from Powis Castle with its famous gardens, from Lake Vyrnwy where you can hire a boat or a bike, from the National Whitewater Centre at Treweryn or from Pistyll Rhaeadr, the highest waterfall in Wales: about one hour from the historic cities of Chester and Shrewsbury, the mountain of Cadair Idris, the glorious Mawddach Estuary, the Ffestiniog steam railway, the great Pontcysyllte Aqueduct or the beaches and castle at Harlech. Newer attractions include Surf Snowdonia and Europe's longest zip wire at Bethesda. National Trust properties nearby include Erddig, Attingham Park and Chirk Castle as well as Powis.  Snowdon, Bodnant Gardens, the great medieval castles at Caernarfon and Conwy or the Ironbridge World Heritage Site are no more than 90 minutes away.
Our postal address is Oswestry (in Shropshire, England) but it takes half an hour to get there.

Our children are grown up now so usually there are just two of us travelling.

Lebensstil

We enjoy walking in the county and visiting beautiful and historic places: Tanymarian would suit people with similar interests.  There are no bright lights here.  The access is steep and the house is on several levels, so it would be difficult for people with mobility problems.
You will find many fine walks starting from the door, or with just a short drive.  One photograph shows the descent from Y Gribin, the ridge opposite Tanymarian, towards Llangynog village.  We walked it last summer with our grandchildren.
