House in Bay of Islands, New Zealand

You can drive from Auckland to Russell in about 3.5 hours or there are flights to Kerikeri airport which is about 3/4hr from Russell.
Russell is in the beautiful Bay of Islands and close to the Waitangi Treaty Ground, the centre of Maori culture, which was also the site where the Maoris and Pakeha (White folks) signed a Treaty to live together in peace.
Russell has a small harbour, a wharf and several beaches.
It can be reached by car but it is quicker to take the small ferry that takes about 25 cars.
The recently opened Twin Coast Cycle Trail. (www.nzcycletrail.com) from coast to coast across the island travelling along tracks and disused railway corridors.
There is a passenger ferry that operates from Russell wharf, which is walking distance from the house, that will take you to Paihia from which you can travel to the Treaty Grounds and the Twin Coast Cycle Trail. From there you can rent bicycles for doing the Trail.

Russell is a charming village being one of the earliest settlement in New Zealand.
It has a pub, a number of restaurants and cafes and also a well stocked Mini Supermarket.
There are a number of walking tracks in the area.
It was originally a whaling community and was once called the "Hell Hole" of the Pacific - no imagination required.
It is generally a quiet historical village.

"The Land of the Long White Clouds" as the indigenous Maori call it.
Settled by them as a result of a long canoe journey from Polynesia some centuries ago.
Russell has a relaxed urban environment without crowds.
Coffee shops and restaurants within walking distance.
Russell has a number of beaches close by and also has good bush walking tracks and, about 1 hrs drive away, bicycle tracks, some on old logging and defunct railway trails from coast to coast, see http://www.twincoastcycletrail.kiwi.nz/ and a review on www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11765297
